The Little Red Hen

Hi everyone! I am so excited to share with you all my newest Fairy Tale Unit... The Little Red Hen.
I absolutely LOVE reading fairy tales to my students and I know how much they look forward to reading and learning about them!

A wonderful thing about fairy tales is that they are packed with so many different story elements and skills to learn. They allow for students to really dive deep into the stories, gain a lot of understanding of the stories, and learn so many skills at the same time!

I love creating units that include lots of hands-on, interactive activities and The Little Red Hen was the perfect fairy tale to do just that!

This unit is PACKED with different activities that include story elements, reading responses, anchor charts, crafts, math activities, games, writing activities, how to activities, and so much more!!

I wanted to make this unit available for many different levels of students. I have included lots of different writing options at different levels for you to be able to differentiate in your class if needed.

There are lots of amazing versions of 'The Little Red Hen'. This unit focuses on and includes activities for 2 versions that you can choose from: 'The Little Red Hen' by Lucinda McQueen OR 'The Little Red Hen' by Paul Galdone.
This unit also has activities that go along with 'The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza' by Philemon Sturges.

Here is a closer look at some of the activities included in The Little Red Hen Unit:

Student Interactive Story Elements Book
Students will work on different story elements in the story throughout this unit. They will focus on the characters, setting, problem/solution, sequencing, and cause/effect

**An anchor chart is included to go along with this student story elements book.

Little Red Hen Prediction
Before finding out if the Little Red Hen shares her bread or cake (depending on the version that you read), students will get to predict if they think she will or will not share. They will also get to write about whether or not the Little Red Hen shared in the end.

Class Book
Your class will get to write about what they think the Little Red Hen will bake next. You can turn their writing into a class book. This class book is great to add to your classroom library for students to enjoy reading!

Would You Share Graph and Data
Included is a large class graph where students will get to decide whether or not they would share if they were the Little Red Hen. After they make the large class graph, students will fill in a data sheet to show the class responses.

Would You Share Writing
Students will get to write about whether they would or would not share the bread or cake (depending on the version that you read) if they were The Little Red Hen.

Beginning/Middle/End 3D Hen Craft
Students will put the events from the story in order: beginning, middle, end.
They will create a 3D hen craft.

Lesson Learned Writing
Students will get to write about the lesson they learned from the story.

Retelling Activity
Students will get to create a scene and use pictures for them to retell the story, 'The Little Red Hen'.

The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza Prediction
Before finding out if the Little Red Hen shares, students will get to predict if they think she will or will not share. They will also get to write about whether or not the Little Red Hen shared in the end.

Shape Pizza
Students will get to make a pizza craft out of different shapes. They will record data on how many shapes they used to create the pizza.

The Little Red Hen Sequencing Craft
Students will get to create a fold out pizza that sequences the story, 'The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza'. An anchor chart is also included for this activity.

 Comparing Stories
After reading both stories, students will help fill in a class anchor chart (included in this unit) that compares the stories, 'The Little Red Hen' and 'The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza'. They will get to see similarities and differences between the two stories. Students will also fill in their own charts.

Favorite Story Writing and Craft
After reading both stories, students will get to decide which story they liked best. This activity has TONS of different writing options. Here are some pictures of some of the different writing options included.

How to Make a Pizza Flip Book
Now it's time to talk about pizza!! Students will get to write about how to make a pizza. They will turn their writing into a flip book. There are different options to choose from. You can choose from sequencing words or numbers as well as writing the steps or just gluing pictures to show the steps. You can also choose from 4 steps of 5 steps. All of these options are included.

Pizza Treat
End the unit with a special pizza treat! The students will be so excited to make pizza in the classroom. You don't even need an oven to enjoy this treat!

Some extra fun activities included
There are 3 different games and 4 different mystery pictures that you can use during centers, small groups, morning work, and more!
